Hi Rita, My name is Madonna Abbott (Critch) orig. from the Gaskiers and I just wanted to tell you that I enjoyed your book very much. I just couldn't put it out of my hands. I can certainly relate to just about everything you wrote. I know Cecil and Val. As a matter of fact, I stood to Bernice and Val's wedding with Cecil in Labrador City. I will be sending a copy of your book to my older sister in Texas. Keep up the good work.
All the best.

Thank you, thank you, thank you Rita. I am a 70 yr.old male living in NS.,formerly of Corner Brook(1959).

Just could not put your book down once I started it. It was as if I was reading my own biography in a lot of ways. The strict nuns, brothers, priests, and father has helped me(finally)to understand that I wasn't the only one who lived the agony.

As the eldest of 11 (4 boys and 7 sisters),there were times that I didn't like my dad a lot. I guess he wanted to make me the "good example" for the rest! I never did feel that I lived up to it until latter years. And as you, I now understand his intentions were all he knew! He, too, had returned from the USA in 1935 to look after his ailing parents.

Couple this with the trauma of being a Catholic and all its ramifications, the mocking at school by more affluent kids, the jostling by "protestant" neighbours, and my own feelings of insecurity flourished.

Not to say that our poverty in any way measured up to your difficulties, dad had a good job at the mill always. We were poor only in relation to others in our surroundings, or as you mother would say "There's always somebody worse off!!"

At any rate, I couldn't wait to get out of Corner Brook ASAP! And like you, I entered a world where I once again felt inferior. Consequently, in every venture I entered, extra effort was made to just measure up to others!

Then Alas! I surprisingly found that I had indeed succeeded in leaving, what I deemed to be my competition, behind.

Your life appears to have taken a similar route. Maybe our fathers did leave us with something?

I wish you all success in the future .
Sincerely,
Al.M.

Rita, I thoroughly enjoyed your book and plan to use it for our children and grandchildren, as it carries so many similarities of our early years living in St. Mary's. It will give them a good insight into how we lived.
Thanks for the memories!

Dear Rita:

Finished your book two days after I got it. I am so very proud of you for having the guts to do this. I have to say that it brought back a lot of memories. To keep this short, you wrote for a lot of us who bear the scars of our childhood. I would recommend your book to anyone and promote it at every opportunity. I hope you sell lots of books. I know that having a big sister helps.

Hi Rita, yes I've arrived, and the temps are just like home(ha...ha). Really, I'm cooked!! I'm so happy for your success with your book. I've enjoyed it so much, many memories came flooding back, and I heard about the comments on the "Good" Reverent, too bad people still can't accept the truth about it all. You only told the truth, nothing is wrong with that. With every good wish for continued success and can't wait for #2. Take Care!

Hi Rita . Finished your book today. What a great book! Thanks for giving us the opportunity to remember how the fifties and sixties were for a lot of not only Newfoundlanders but many in rural communities around the western world. It brought back a lot of memories for me as I'm sure for thousands more. I'm proud of your accomplishment and very proud to call you cuz. Love to you and your family. It was great catching up at the book launch. Hope I'll see you again soon.

Rita, Don't mind the one comment by the former resident of St. Vincent's who believes your book is a tall tale. As a friend of your family I know your story is all true. Rita has not insinuated that “all” men were tyrants or treated their women badly. Her book is HER memoir ---a report or record of important events based on Rita’s own personal observation or special knowledge, not anyone else’s. There are hundreds of others out there who are impressed that this story has been told, and are now relating their own stories.

Hi Aunt Rita,

I just stumbled onto your website... and I'm so glad I did. Since I never had the opportunity to meet My Grandparents.. It is beyound comforting to read about them, and learn what kind of characters they were.

I am very eager to read the entire book.

Take Care :)
